Chipping: Hit It Low & Get Square to Make Your Uphill Shot

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

An uphill chip shot can be tricky.  To hit the ball low with some added roll, adjust your stance so you’re lined up parallel to the target and stand a little closer to the ball.  Then, aim your shoulders about 2-3 feet left of the target and aim your feet another foot or so to the left.  By maintaining a square stance, you’re more likely to hit the ball with a square club face and get the ball airborne on a low trajectory and rolling toward the target.  Golf iron in grass

As for club selection, grab your 9 iron or pitching wedge, as opposed to your sand wedge.  Your 9 iron and pitching wedge have less bounce, making it easier to hit the ball crisp and get it moving with minimal backspin.

And the benefit to practicing your chipping using a virtual golf simulator?  Unlimited mulligans.  (Just hit “M” during your virtual golf game.)  Chip the exact same lay again and again using different clubs.  That way you really get the feel of your what exactly you can expect from each of your clubs.

Etiquette bonus: you won’t be holding up pace of play.
